AI CAN MATCH SKILLS. IT CAN’T MEASURE PURPOSE.
Why human insight still matters in finding the right people
Artificial intelligence is changing recruitment. It can help organisations and recruiters analyse information, streamline processes and identify potential candidates more efficiently. But recruitment, particularly in the for-purpose sector, has never been about simply finding someone who matches a list of skills and experience.
The right appointment requires something deeper: understanding the connection between a person and the purpose of an organisation.
The strongest candidates are more than their experience
A resume can tell you what someone has achieved. It can show their qualifications, career history and technical capability. But it cannot tell you:
why someone is motivated to make their next career move
what causes and communities they genuinely care about
whether they will connect with an organisation’s mission
how they build trust and relationships
whether their values align with the organisation they are joining
These insights come through conversations, not data points.
Purpose matters
For organisations creating social impact, hiring the right person is about more than capability. People working in this sector are often drawn by a shared commitment to improving outcomes for individuals, families and communities. That alignment matters.
Someone can have the right skills on paper, but if they do not connect with the organisation’s purpose, culture and values, the appointment may not deliver the impact intended.
Recruitment is about understanding the complete picture
The best recruitment decisions consider both sides of the equation: Can this person do the work AND will this person thrive in this organisation and contribute to its purpose?
That requires understanding the organisation’s challenges, the candidate’s motivations and the factors that create a successful match.
The future of recruitment combines technology and human judgement
AI will continue to play an important role in recruitment, helping make processes more efficient and informed. But technology can support the search — it cannot replace the conversations, relationships and judgement required to understand people.
Because the best appointments are not just about matching skills. They are about finding people who believe in why the work matters.
